Not even 24 hours removed from a heartbreaking loss to Tallahassee College, the Bears not only righted the wrongs from the night before but played a strong brand of basketball Saturday, topping No. 10 Chipola College, 68-57.
"I'm just proud of the guys," Southwest head coach Corey Schmidt said. "We lost a tough one yesterday at the buzzer. When you have something like that happen, it is easy to get discouraged and get down and for them to come back the very next day, against a Top-10 team on the road and at their place and really just control the whole game."
Even though the Indians quickly took a 4-0 lead, the Bears (1-1) jumped ahead and never looked back. They shot 38.7 percent from the floor, 27.3 percent from 3-point range and 58 percent from the free throw line in the first half and led 34-23 at halftime.
Even though the field goal percentage dipped a bit to 31 percent in the second half, the 3-point and free throw percentages both increased to 31 percent and 81 percent, respectively.
A big reason for the increase in free throw percentage was sophomore LeVionne Lindsey who was 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. He finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine boards. The top scorer was Tylik Weeks who for the second-consecutive game shined offensively. He finished with a double-double posting 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Jaylen Haliburton finished with eight points with three of those points coming on a big shot down the stretch.
"He hit a big 3 when they (Chipola) cut it close," Schmidt said. "I'm just proud of his game, he played really, really well."
Haliburton's big shot down the stretch helped the Bears create a bigger cushion as they built new momentum and rode it out the rest of the way for the win.
Southwest will be on the road once again for its next contest as the Bears head west to Carthage, Texas to face another ranked opponent in Panola College Tuesday at 6 p.m.
