The Lady Bears have been on a tear as of late and following Monday's home contest against Southern-Shreveport on Day 1 of the 2024 Coca-Cola Classic, they continued their stellar play and remained undefeated after topping the Lady Jaguars 70-38.
The Lady Bears (5-0) came out swinging in the first quarter as four different players registered 3-pointers including two each from Mookie Lampley and Gracie Miller.
"He (Southwest head coach Brent Harris) wanted us not to play down and do what we knew how to do," said Lampley who finished with 10 points.
The scoring frenzy helped Southwest race out to a 27-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and Coach Harris said that he felt his team had a good counter to what Shreveport was going to show on defense.
"We expected a little bit of zone and I'm not 1000% sure but I believe they changed quickly so we were a little prepared for that," he said. "We have some (shooters) and that is just what they do."
Another strong outing on offense, highlighted by Miller who scored nine of Southwest's first 11 second quarter points, was complemented by another strong showing on defense as the Lady Bears limited the Lady Jaguars to nine points for the second-consecutive quarter taking a 47-18 advantage into the locker room at the half.
While the Southwest defense continued to shine in the third quarter, the offense struggled a bit, scoring eight points. The Lady Bears led 57-22 entering the final frame.
A couple of 3-pointers from Mady Smith helped keep the Lady Bears comfortably ahead as they rode out the momentum to the win. Smith and Miller led Southwest with 12 points apiece.
The Lady Bears will host LSU-Eunice at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on the second and final day of the Coca-Cola Classic.
