Bears score late, top Northwest as Mills reaches 50th win

It was a night filled with emotion and good cheer all around Tuesday at home as not only did the Bears celebrate Sophomore Night but they also secure a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Northwest helping Coach Zach Mills reach his 50th victory at Southwest.

"I remembered that stat before every other game, leading up to this one. I'm so happy for them, so proud of them and so thankful for them," said Mills praising his players, helping him reach his milestone. "They (Northwest) made it so, so tough on us (tonight). I'm just so happy that the guys fought through it, came together and got the win."

Both the Bears (7-6-2, 3-4-2 MACCC) and the Rangers were jockeying for position early in the match as the opposing defenses shined. Northwest broke through in the 39th minute with a goal putting Southwest down 1-0.

That score stayed true until the 72nd minute when Jeysson Cruz scored a goal on an assist from Justin Ruiz tying the match at 1.

A little over 2:00 later, the Bears enjoyed their first lead of the contest as Jack Boyd took advantage of the momentum boost putting the ball past the Northwest keeper, making it a 2-1 match.

As the final 10:00 ticked away, the Rangers had one final surge pay off with a goal in the 82nd minute, once again tying the match, this time at 2.

However with just over 6:00 to go, the Bears got the last laugh as Ruiz placed a corner kick right in front of fellow sophomore Robert Garcia who scored the eventual game-winning goal.

"I saw a perfect ball and I put it in on a header," said Garcia. "We practiced this during the week."

He adds that it was special getting the eventual game winner on Sophomore Night and it is a memory that he will keep.

The Bears will play their final road match of the regular season on Friday when they head to Decatur to face East Central at 7 p.m.
