Barcelona, Lady Bears shine in win at Hinds

Earlier in the season, the Lady Bears became frustrated after being unable to top Hinds as their non-conference match ended a 1-1 tie. However, in Friday's conference rematch, it was the complete opposite as Southwest got a big contribution from Caroline Barcelona in a 5-1 win over the Lady Eagles in Raymond.

After the match, Southwest head coach Nicole Cooper said that recent practices have not only helped her team get better overall but has helped them prepare better

"I think that our preparation at practice has really benefited us and given us the tools that we need in order to perform," said Southwest head coach Nicole Cooper who added that following Friday's win, her team has now set a new season scoring record which currently stands at 40, three better than the previous mark.

The Lady Bears (5-6-2, 2-5 MACCC) got the stellar play from Barcelona early on as she scored goals in the 14th and 21st minutes on assists from Maylee McLeod and Evie Peet, respectively, giving Southwest a 2-0 advantage.

Not long afterward, Amari Simmons got into the act, herself, with a goal in the 25th minute increasing the visitors' lead to 3-0.

In the second half, the roles were reversed from the first two goals as Barcelona recorded assists on goals from McLeod in the 52nd minute and Peet in the 57th minute making it a 5-0 game.

After the match Barcelona admitted that there was pressure felt entering the contest.

"There was a lot of pressure going into this game since we tied them before 1-1," she said. "Taking the pressure off really helped me calm down and execute."

Hinds got its goal in the 71st minute but that was all that the tough Southwest defense allowed all match.

Barcelona led the Lady Bears with two goals and two assists. McLeod and Peet each had one goal and one assist.

The Lady Bears will return to action on Tuesday in Fulton facing Itawamba at 1 p.m.
