In their final non-conference test of the season, the Lady Bears showed grit and determination on the road Tuesday, picking up a 2-1 victory over Hinds.
"This week at practice, our main focus was on our speed of play, executing the small things and working on our attack in the transition to the attacking third," Southwest head coach Nicole Cooper said.
Despite not playing for a week, the Lady Bears (2-3) wanted to come out and set the tone early. But the Lady Eagles had the same idea as both teams battled hard and were successful in preventing any scoring through the first 45 minutes of play.
Not long into the second half, that trend was broken by the Lady Bears. In the 49
th minute, Juliette Charriez Rivera got an assist from Hannah Case before finding the back of the net, putting Southwest up 1-0.
About 5:00 later, however, Hinds pulled even with a goal on a penalty kick.
The Lady Bears kept pressing, trying to get the upper hand once again and their hard work paid off in the 86
th minute when Rose Coats set up Kayla Martin for a shot before the freshman from Luling, LA delivered with the eventual game-winning goal.
The Lady Bears open up conference play at home Friday at 5 p.m. hosting Jones.
