Just two days removed from an impressive win at home against Jones, the Bears carried over that momentum to Saturday and picked up an 82-72 victory over visiting Baton Rouge CC.
"I though that tonight, we shot well," Southwest head coach Corey Schmidt said. "I think that anytime you can come off of a win you try to continue to do what got you there. Our guys did a good job of adjusting their mindset for the game plan but also trying to feed off of the things that helped get us the win the other night."
The win marked the fifth in the last six games for Southwest.
Early on, the host Bears (6-4) were locked in a back-and-forth battle with the visiting Bears. A total of five lead changes occurred during the first 9:25 of the game with the latest putting Southwest ahead 17-14 following a 3-pointer by Jahshawne Joseph.
A couple of big 3-point plays a few minutes later helped keep Southwest ahead but not long afterward, the hosts lost their lead before yet another tug-of-war ensued in the closing minutes of the first half. A 3-pointer from Deon Brown gave the lead back to Southwest before two Brown free throws with just over a minute to go and a Tylik Weeks layup at the buzzer put the host Bears ahead 44-39 at the half.
An 8-3 Southwest run opened play in the second half as the rally culminated with another Joseph 3-pointer putting the hosts ahead by 10 at 52-42.
Even though Southwest continued to find ways of putting the ball in the basket, Baton Rouge kept hanging around, staying within striking distance. The visitors narrowed the gap to as little as four with 8:25 to go.
But Drone put the team on his back. He connected on two big 3-pointers over the next 4:00 of play before following his second make with another field goal at the 1:30 mark, giving Southwest an 11-point advantage at 80-69.
After the game, Drone said that he had to step up and help lead the team.
"In those types of situations, I feel like I am going to score the ball or help make the right plays and that is what I did," said Drone who finished with a game-high 24 points.
Even though Baton Rouge scored on two trips down the floor, Southwest got two free throws from Brown with under a minute to go to help ice the game.
In addition to Drone's big performance, Southwest also got double-digit scoring from Weeks who had 17 points and Brown who posted 16.
Southwest will return to action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. playing host to Louisiana Knights Post Grad Academy.
