Leading by two late, the Bears appeared as if they were about to secure their first road win of the young season Wednesday at Coast Alabama – North. But a last-second 3-point shot from the host Coyotes banked in as Southwest lost a heart-breaker, 71-70.
Southwest head coach Corey Schmidt said that his team is capable of playing better than what they displayed Wednesday night.
"I'm disappointed in the way that we came out," he said. "I thought that we got off to a slow start. As a staff, we have to do a better job of getting them ready to play the game. I thought that our minds weren't where they needed to be to start the game."
The Bears (1-3) had a balanced scoring attack in the first half with six different players registering points, led by Tylik Weeks who had half of his 16 total points in the first 20:00 of play. Despite this, Southwest trailed 32-27 at the half.
Things began to pick up for the Bears in the second half. About halfway through the period, they went on a 14-0 run to take the lead.
Down the stretch, Southwest watched its lead slowly dwindle down to a one-possession advantage with under a minute to go. A late score by the Bears helped secure a two-point advantage as the Coyotes had a little under :02 to work with. Following the inbound pass, a shot from beyond the 3-point arch went off of the back board and in leaving the Bears shocked and heart-broken with the one-point loss.
Mark Drone led the Bears with a game-high 26 points. Half of his points came via the free throw line where he continued his stellar play, missing only one on the evening.
The Bears return home for their next contest a 7:30 p.m. game Monday night against Southern-Shreveport.
