After coming up short Saturday, falling to Pensacola State on Day 1 of the Chipola Classic, the Bears were hoping to close out play Sunday with a win over host Chipola. But the Bears couldn't find the right formula, falling 78-70.
"I proud of the guys' mentality, focus and response after yesterday," Southwest head coach Corey Schmidt said. "Coming back with an aggressive and physical mentality to get more offensive rebounds than them. We just came up a little short and we have to figure out how to get over the hump."
The Bears (1-2) got off to a strong start and led the Indians during the first half with the largest lead being by eight and coming at the 11:21 mark of the first half. Despite this, Chipola enjoyed a 40-27 lead at the half.
Things began to pick up more for the Bears in the second half as they out-scored their opponent 43-38 during the period but it wasn't enough in the end.
Three starters shined offensively as freshman Tylik Weeks led the charge with 18 points to go along with 6 rebounds. Deon Brown had 15 points while Mark Drone put together his second double-digit scoring effort with 17 to go along with 6 rebounds and 3 assists, drawing praise from Schmidt after the game.
The Bears will once again be on the road for their next contest. They travel to Monroeville, Alabama on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest against Coastal Alabama – North.
