Lady Bears fall to Gulf Coast in season finale

Heading into Tuesday's season finale at home against Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Lady Bears were hoping to pick up a win to end the campaign on a high note. And despite playing hard, they were unable to pull out a victory, falling 3-1 on Sophomore Night. Following the match 10 Lady Bear sophomores were honored.

"I thought that we came out really strong and gave up an early goal ,but we were able to equalize it," Lady Bear head coach Nicole Cooper said.

The Lady Bears (4-12, 2-9 MACCC) tried to get the upper hand first but it was the visitors from Perkinston who scored first as a goal in the 6th minute put Southwest down 1-0.

It wasn't long afterward before Southwest drew even. A little less than six minutes later, Caroline Barcelona found the back of the net after getting a pass from Kayla Martin.

Both teams continued to battle until the closing seconds of the first half when the Lady Bulldogs jumped back on top with a goal with only 0:01 left on the clock.

In the second half, the Lady Bears tried to pull even once again but was unable to find any more magic.

After the match, Cooper said that she is sad that the season has come to a close but she is already looking forward to the 2024 campaign.

"Although our season could have gone better, the momentum going into next year has everybody fired up," said Cooper, who was grateful for the hard work and contributions her sophomores put forth during their time at Southwest. "There were lots of cries but also lots of smiles because our program has a bright future."
