After a pair of three-pointers in the closing seconds missed their mark, the Bears dropped a 69-67 MACCC South Division decision to the host Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs Monday night.

The Bears trailed by as many as six points in the first half before cutting their deficit to 35-31 at the end of the first 20:00 of play.

Things began to turn around for the Bears (7-7, 6-6) in the second half and they took a 63-57 lead with 5:37 left to play.

They then led 67-61 with 2:31 to go, but the lead would not hold as Gulf Coast (5-7, 4-7) came from behind to secure the win.

"We took another one on the chin tonight," said Bears head coach Bryan Bender. "Credit to Gulf Coast for making shots early and executing down the stretch. We had our typical game of runs back and forth, but couldn't make a shot during the last three minutes of the game to seal the victory."

"We have a week off to rekindle our passion and get back to work at the end of the week," Bender continued. "This has been a long stretch and we will take what we have learned this month and it will make us a stronger team come the first week of April when we'll have to win four games over nine days (in the NJCAA Region XXIII tournament)."

Mazae Blake led the Bears' offense with 17 points while Mykayle Carter scored 11 points.

The Bears made 11of 14 free throws.

Gulf Coast's Melvion Flangan led all scorers with 27 points. He and his teammates combined to go 5-7 at the free throw line.

The Bears will take a few days off before returning to the court on March 15 when they host the Meridian Eagles. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 start.
