Mazae Blake nailed a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded Monday night to give the Bears a nail-biting 76-74 win over the visiting Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs.

With the win, their third straight, the Bears moved to 5-1 on the season. Gulf Coast dropped to 3-3.

The game was tight from start to finish with 8 ties and 14 lead changes on the night; 7 of the ties and 9 of the lead changes came in the first half alone.

A Querrion Gadson bucket with 2:10 on the clock gave the Bears their largest lead of the first half 37-31and they went on to hold a 41-39 lead at intermission.

The Bears seemed on the verge of busting the game wide open in the second half. Going on a 12-3 run, capped by a Mykayle Carter layup, they built a 55-46 lead with 13:52 left the game.

The visitors, however, had other ideas. Outscoring the Bears 20-10, Gulf Coast took a 70-69 lead with 5:04 still to play.

Trailing 74-71, the Bears pulled to within 74-73 on Blake's layup with 2:06 showing.

The score remained the same until the ball found its way into Blake's hand and he fired in the game winner as the clock reached 0:00.0

"It was great to be on the right end of this one," said Bears head coach Bryan Bender. "They (Gulf Coast) missed some free throws down the stretch (and) we got some stops down the stretch."

"Overall, (it was) a great team effort," Bender continued. "I'm really proud to be on the right end of that one. We've got to execute a little bit better, but we escaped with a win without, arguably, our two top guys (Michael Barber and Tada Stricklen). We go to Meridian next and it will be really tough competition and no matter how tired we are, we continue to persevere and get tougher and find ways to win."

Blake led the Bears' offense with 16 points in the game while Gadson was also in double figures with 14 points.

The Bears made 13 of 18 free throws.

Gulf Coast's Melvion  Flangan led all scorers with 23 points on the night. He and his teammates went 13-22 at the free throw line.

The Bears next face the Meridian Community College Eagles in Meridian on February 11. Game time is set for 6:00
