In a game that took 10 extra minutes to complete, the Lady Bears dropped a heartbreaker to the visiting Meridian Lady Eagles Thursday night, 78-76, in double overtime.

With the loss, the Lady Bears fell to 2-2 overall. Meridian climbed to 4-1.

A three pointer and layup from Sydni Tangle and a Shylia McGee jumper gave the Lady Bears an early 7-3 lead in the opening quarter. However, the visitors went on a 12-3 run the rest of the way to take a 15-10 advantage at the end of the first 10:00 of play.

Continuing a run that began in the first quarter, Meridian took a 22-12 lead with 6:04 left in the second quarter. They went on to hold a 37-23 lead at intermission.

The Lady Bears came alive in the third quarter with an Analya White trey completing a 14-4 run and bringing them to within 41-35 with 6:28 on the quarter.

Meridian then went on a run of their own, 16-7, to close out the third and give them a 59-46 lead with one quarter remaining.

A jumper and, later, two free throws from Mikayla Etienne helped the Lady Bears score the first nine points of the fourth quarter to trim their deficit to 59-55 with 6:33 still to play.

After Meridian increased their lead back to 66-58, the Lady Bears scored the final eight points of the quarter. A pair of Jade Myles free throws tied the game at 66-66 with 0:46 on the clock.

With neither team able to score again in regulation, the game went into extra play.

Meridian took a 70-68 lead with 4:00 left in the first overtime. But, the Lady Bears stayed close and tied the game at 71-71 on an Etienne free throw with 1:01 on the clock. Both teams missed a shot in the final seconds of play to force a second extra period.

A layup from White gave the Lady Bears a 74-73 lead with 1:56 left in the second overtime. Unfortunately, Meridian would score five of the final seven points to escape with the win.

"(In) the first half we were not ourselves offensively," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "The second half and overtimes might have been the most proud of a group we have been in our tenure (at Southwest)."

"We know what we can improve on," Harris continued. "Meridian is a very good team and they deserved the win tonight, but we will improve going forward."

Tangle led the Lady Bears' offense with 19 points in the game. Etienne netted 17 points while McGee scored 15 and White picked up 12.

The Lady Bears hit 25 of 34 free throws.

Meridian's Sidney Sims topped all scorers with 24 points on the night. She and her teammates went 9-19 at the free throw line.

The Lady Bears take to the road for their next game, traveling to Poplarville on February 15 to take on Pearl River. Tipoff is set for 6:00.
