Bears drop close one at Meridian

The game was yet another close one for the Bears. Unfortunately, this time, it did not go their way as they were defeated 67-65 Thursday night by the host Meridian Eagles.
 
With the loss, the Bears fell to 5-2. Meridian moved to 4-2.
 
Meridian led most of the first half, and were on top by as many as 12, before going into intermission with a 44-37 lead.
 
The Bears took a 51-50 lead with just over 10:00 left in the second half and were on top 62-53 with just over 5:00 to go. However, the lead would not hold as the hosts closed out the game on a 14-3 run to secure the win.
 
"Winning on the road is difficult in our league," said Bears head coach Bryan Bender, "especially when your roster is not a full strength. We battled from 12 down early to hold a lead late, but we missed a few free throws down the stretch and layups in traffic that we needed to win the game."

"It was great to see us lock up in the second half on defense as we held them to 23 points, compared to 44 in the first half. We have a huge game coming up Monday. It was a tough 12- day stretch with five games and we will rest up this weekend as we take on the first-place Wildcats of (4th-ranked) Pearl River."
 
Querrion Gadson led the Bears offense Thursday night with 17 points. Malik Lamin and Tada Stricklen both scored 12.
 
The Bears made 13 of 22 free throws.
 
Meridian's Justin Brown led all scorers in the game with 20 points. He and his teammates combined to go 12-23 at the free throw line.
 
Scheduled for February 15, the Bears' home game against Pearl River is set for a 6:00 start.
