The Lady Bears' season came to an end Wednesday night as the Lady Bengals of LSU-Eunice emerged victorious from their NJCAA Region XXIII battle, 71-66, in Clinton.

The loss left the Lady Bears with a 17-9 record for the 2019-20 season. LSUE climbed to 21-6 as they clinched a spot in the tournament semi-final round.

LSUE threatened to put the game away early as they exploded out to a 23-5 lead with 3:03 on the clock. The Lady Bears would then score eight of the final 11 points in the quarter and pull to within 26-13 at the end of the quarter on a D'Mya Wilson free throw.

The Lady Bears outscored their opponents 17-9 in the second quarter. A pair of Jade Myles free throws cut their deficit to single digits, 32-23, with 5:23 on the clock. Scoring the final five points of the quarter, they then pulled to within 35-30 at halftime on an Alexus Marsh free throw late in the quarter.

A Jolie Williams jumper with 8:02 showing in the third quarter had the Lady Bears within 35-32. The teams would then literally trade baskets the rest of the quarter before LSUE took a 46-40 advantage into the final quarter.

LSUE would move out to a 10 point lead three times in the final quarter, but could not quite put the Lady Bears away. An 8-1 run, capped by a Wilson layup, pulled the Lady Bears to within 61-58 with 1:37 left in the contest.

But, it was not to be as LSUE went 5-6 at the free throw line down the stretch to secure the win.

"Tonight we were slow out of the gate," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "LSUE is a well-coached veteran team and they should it tonight."

"I was extremely proud of our team for battling back," Harris continued. "Taylor Ben converted some open looks, Alexus did some good things around the basket and D'Mya was really good creating offense. 17-9, 2nd in the (MACJC) South with 10 freshmen, two transfers and one returner…overall a great year!"

Wilson ended her freshmen year with a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Williams and Marsh also scored in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Lady Bears made 12 of 23 free throws.

LSUE's Alona Washington led all scorers in the game with 22 points. She and her teammates were 11-14 at the free throw line.
