A Jolie Williams layup with only 0:04 on the clock proved to be the difference Thursday night as the Lady Bears outlasted visiting Pearl River 63-61 before a packed house in Summit.

With the win, the Lady Bears moved to 11-4 on the season and 4-2 in the MACJC South. Pearl River fell to 9-6, 2-4.

The opening quarter gave a hint of what was to come as the teams traded leads four times and were tied five. The Lady Bears took their largest lead of the quarter, 20-14, with 0:40 on the clock and carried a 20-16 advantage into the second quarter.

The second quarter was much like the first with one tie and seven lead changes. A Williams three pointer with 7:57 on the clock gave the Lady Bears their largest lead of the game, 27-19.

Pearl River, however, was not ready to give in as they outscored the Lady Bears 15-6 the rest of the quarter to take a 34-33 lead at the end of the first half.

Pearl River outscored the Lady Bears 7-2 to open the third quarter and move out to their largest lead of the game, 41-35, with 7:24 showing on the clock.

A 13-4 run by the Lady Bears then put them back in the lead, 48-45, with 4:16 on the clock and they would go on to a 52-49 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Lady Bears trailed 53-52 with 7:07 left in the game before a D'Mya Wilson bucket started them on an 8-2 run that gave them a 60-55 lead with 3:13 to go.

But, Pearl River then scored six straight to go on top 61-60 with 2:05 left.

A free throw from Shylia McGee knotted the game at 61-all with 1:04 on the clock and the score stayed the same until Williams' late-game heroics gave the Lady Bears the narrow win.

"I'm very proud of our entire team tonight," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We got in some foul trouble early and our bench kept us going."

"Geonna Marshall gave us a lift on the boards," Harris continued, "(and) I thought Shylia and Taylor Ben were good defensively. Jolie made a big play at the end and found one last stop on the other end. (It was a) great college game (and) both teams played well."

Williams led the Lady Bears' offense with 16 points in the game while Wilson was also in double figures with 10 points; Williams also recorded eight steals. The Lady Bears were 3-9 at the free throw line.

Pearl River's Alanna Smith led all scorers with 29 points on the night. She and her teammates hit 11 of 19 free throws.

The Lady Bears remain at home for their next contest as they host East Central on January 27 at 5:30 in South Division play.
