Bears get tough win at Meridian

The Bears picked up their first MACJC South Division win Thursday night with a tough 76-70 road decision over the Meridian Eagles.
 
The first half was tight from start to finish with five ties and 11 lead changes. A Damian Dear layup, with 12:30 on the clock, gave the Bears their largest lead of the half, 14-8 and the Eagles' largest lead, 29-25, came with 7:21 before the end of the half.
 
Dear made good on one of two free throws late to send the Bears into the locker room with a 39-38 lead.
 
The Bears (7-4, 1-1) outscored the Eagles 24-12 in the first 10:00 of the second half. A Spencer Rodgers jumper gave them their largest lead of the game, 65-50. They would not be headed the rest of the way, though not without a strong effort by the Eagles.
 
The Eagles (5-6, 0-2) found began finding their grove, going on a 16-5 run to cut the Bears' lead to 70-66 with just under 4:00 remaining.
 
The Bears, however, would maintain their composure to escape with the win. A Jalon Andrews layup with 1:55 to go put the Bears on top by six, 74-68, and the would hold on to win by the same margin.
 
"We make everything more fun than it needs to be," said Bears head coach Bryan Bender. "It was a great win for our program. We're going to be a pretty special team if we can keep it going."
 
Dear led all scorers with 20 points in the game. Andrews and Rodgers both finished with 19 points.

The Bears were 6-9 at the free throw line.
 
Alvarez Powell paced the Eagles with 17 points. He and his teammates made 17 of 30 free throws.
 
The Bears visit Mississippi Gulf Coast for their next game, traveling to Perkinston on January 13 for a 7:30 South Division contest.
