Lady Bears win big at Meridian

The Lady Bears led from start to finish Monday night at Meridian Community College and headed home with a 60-47 win over the host Lady Eagles in their MACJC South Division matchup.
 
Tootie Carter and Ty Lee combined to put the Lady Bears (8-10, 3-6) midway through the opening quarter. They went on to hold a 13-8 advantage at the end of the first 10:00 of play.
 
A Tootie Rankin trey with 2:52 on the 2nd quarter clock gave the Lady Bears a double-digit lead, 24-14. A late free throw from Maddi Gatte then sent the Lady Bears into the locker room with a 29-16 halftime lead.
 
The teams traded baskets in a low-scoring 3rd quarter that ended with the Lady Bears on top by 14 points, 39-25.
 
A Nia Henderson bucket with 1:23 left in the final quarter gave the Lady Bears their largest lead of the night, 60-43, and they went on to claim the victory by 13 points.
 
"Tonight we were very proud of our defensive effort," stated Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We played with great poise against the zone, especially Ty."
 
"Tootie Carter was really good on the offensive boards," Harris continued, "(while) Tootie Rankin took a big charge and shot the ball well from the perimeter.
Amari Pittman had a great night rebounding the ball."
 
Lee scored 15 points for the Lady Bears to lead all scorers. Carter tallied 12 points while Rankin netter 10. The Lady Bears hit 17 of 21 free throws.
 
Jordan Bell scored 14 points to top the Meridian (9-8, 3-4) offense. She and her teammates combined to go 13-16 at the free throw line.
 
The Lady Bears remain on the road for their next contest as they travel to Perkinston Thursday night to face the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.
