The Lady Bears fought hard to the end Thursday night, but were unable to close out the season with a win as they fell to the visiting East Central Lady Warriors 68-62 in an MACJC South Division matchup.

After falling behind 6-0 early in the opening quarter, the Lady Bears fought back to lead 19-18 on a Tootie Rankin bucket with 0:16 on the clock. But, a late East Central bucket gave the visitors a 20-19 lead after the first 10:00 of play.

Trailing by three midway through the second quarter, the Lady Bears (8-15, 3-11) tied the game on a Jamaya Galloway trey and took a 26-24 lead on Ty Lee's layup with 4:56 on the still left in the half.

East Central (18-5, 9-5) then outscored the Lady Bears 9-4 the remainder of the quarter to take a 33-30 lead into intermission.

East Central extended its lead to 37-30 early in the third quarter, but the Lady Bears pulled back to within 37-36, with 5:54 showing, following a pair of Galloway free throws and a Rankin jumper.

East Central, however, would maintain their lead the rest of the quarter and take a 48-44 advantage into the final quarter.

The Lady Bears scored 11 of the first 15 points of the fourth quarter and grabbed a 55-52 lead after a pair of Galloway three pointers.

Unfortunately, East Central would go on an 11-2 run to reclaim the lead, 63-57, with 2:34 left in the game. The Lady Bears would be unable to come any closer than four points the rest of the night as East Central left town with the six-point win.

"We were very proud of our effort tonight," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We competed (but) we did not help ourselves at the (free throw)line, especially in the second half."

"This is a great group of sophomores," Harris continued. "They have great character and they will go on to make us proud."

Galloway scored 20 points for the Lady Bears to lead all scorers. Lee and Rankin both netted 16 points. The Lady Bears hit 15 of 26 free throws.

Sharan Turner scored 14 points to lead East Central. She and her teammates combined to make 13 of 23 free throws.
