vs NW Final

Women's Basketball | 12/2/2019 10:26:00 PM

The Lady Bears ran their record to 6-1 Monday night with a 73-65 win, their fifth in a row, over the visiting Lady Rangers of Northwest Mississippi.

Things did not look promising for the Lady Bears in the early going as Northwest burst out to a 6-0 lead. But, a 16-2 run, capped by a Geonna Marshall free throw, put the Lady Bears on top 16-8 with 5:10 on the clock.

Late in the quarter, a Jolie Williams trey put the Lady Bears on top 21-14, with 2:55 on the clock, and they would go on to hold a 23-17 lead at the end of the quarter.

With 5:42 left in the second quarter, a D'Mya Wilson layup extended their largest lead of the half, 32-17. They would go on to take a 40-26 advantage in the locker room at halftime.

Taylor Ben sank a free throw with 8:06 left in the third quarter to give the Lady Bears their biggest lead of the night, 44-28.

Northwest (7-3) was not ready to go quietly, however. Going on a 16-3 run, the visitors trimmed their deficit to 47-42 with 2:30 on the clock. The Lady Bears then scored nine of the final 14 points of the quarter to lead 56-47 with one quarter still to play.

The Lady Bears maintained a fairly comfortable lead throughout the fourth quarter.  Wilson's layup with 6:08 remaining left them with a 66-56 lead and they would go on to claim the eight-point victory.

"We obviously played a better first half," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "But, we made enough plays late to finish."

"D'Mya was good in transition," Harris continued. "We all need to understand time and score a little better. Hopefully we can work on that this week."

Wilson led the Lady Bears, and all scorers, with 24 points in the game. Williams was also in double figures with 15 points.

The Lady Bears made 20 of 36 free throws.

Kayla Freeman topped the Northwest offense with 12 points. She and her teammates went 8-11 at the free throw line.

The Lady Bears return to the court, and open MACJC South Division play, on December 9 when the host the Lady Bulldogs of Hinds Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.
