Lady Bears cruise past BRCC

The Lady Bears had an easy time of it Monday night in the opening round of the Southwest/Coca-Cola Classic as they cruised to an 86-55 win over Baton Rouge Community College.
 
Trailing 4-3 early, the Lady Bears (4-1) took a 6-4 lead on a Taylor Ben jumper with 7:33 left in the first quarter and never looked back. Jolie Williams' late bucket left the Lady Bears with a 24-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
It was more of the same in the second quarter as they Lady Bears went up by 31, 48-17, on a D'Mya Wilson layup with 1:36 on the clock. They then took a 48-25 lead into intermission.
 
Shylia McGee's basket with 6:24 left in the third quarter gave the Lady Bears a 59-27 advantage. A Geonna Marshall short-range jumper with under 1:00 on the clock put the Lady Bears up 70-35 with the fourth quarter still to come.
 
The Lady Bears took their largest lead of the night, 73-37, on Marshall's layup with 8:10 left in the contest and they would go on to record the 31-point victory.
 
"We got off to a hot start," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris, "especially with Jolie and Taylor. We also saw some improvement in our defensive rotations. We really made some unselfish decisions."
 
Williams led the Lady Bears, and all scorers, with 21 points. Ben was next in scoring with 17 points and McGee netted 11.
 
The Lady Bears went 8-10 at the free throw line and 12-18 behind the three-point arc.
 
Desrael Schnyder topped Baton Rouge (1-4) with 13 points. She and her teammates made 16 of 18 free throws.
 
The Lady Bears close out their portion of the Coca-Cola Classic Tuesday night at 5:30 with a matchup against the Southern-Shreveport Lady Jaguars.
