It took two overtimes, but the Lady Bears did what needed to be done in the end as they started off the 2019 portion of their schedule with a 78-75 win Saturday afternoon over host Baton Rouge Community College.

The first quarter gave an indication of what was to come as there were three ties and three lead changes. A Ty Lee bucket with 6:15 on the clock helped the Lady Bears (5-4) take a 10-6 lead. BRCC  (6-9) then scored 17 of the final 24 points of the quarter to take a 22-17 lead after the first 10:00 of play.

BRCC took its largest lead of the night, 26-17, with 7:41 left in the second quarter. A pair of Tootie Carter layups then helped the Lady Bears cut their deficit to 28-25 with 4:30 on the clock. They then trailed 31-28 at the end of the half.

The Lady Bears outscored BRCC 12-6 to open the third quarter and took a 40-37 lead, with 3:30 on the clock, on baskets from Carter and Amari Pittman. They went on to take a 47-43 advantage into the fourth quarter.

With 2:59 left in the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears seemed to have things well in hand as they held a 57-49 lead. BRCC refused to quit, however. Outscoring the Lady Bears 10-2 the remained of the quarter, BRCC tied the game at 59-59 at the end of regulation and forcing the extra play.

BRCC took a 69-66 lead with 0:36 left in the first overtime before an old-fashioned three-point play by Jamaya Galloway helped the Lady Bears knot the game at 69-69. BRCC missed a chance to win the game in the remaining time, forcing the second extra period.

A jumper and pair of free throws from Carter put the Lady Bears on top 73-69 with 3:42 left in the second overtime. After BRCC made the score 76-75, Galloway nailed a pair of free throws, with 0:07 on the clock, to seal the deal for the Lady Bears.

"I was very proud of our team effort today," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris.

"Jamaya made some big plays and obviously hit some huge free throws," Harris went continued. "Ty was very aggressive offensively and had some tough late rebounds and Tootie Carter made some very athletic plays on both ends."

Lee had a double-double, with 18 points and 10 rebounds, to lead the Lady Bears. Galloway scored 17 points, and had 8 assists, while Carter scored 15 points and Pittman tallied 13. The Lady Bears went 23-30 at the free throw line.

BRCC's Kayla Watson led all scorers with 32 points. She and her teammates combined to hit 19 of 24 free throws.

The Lady Bears return to the court on Monday when they host the Mississippi Delta. Tip off has been moved to 3:00.
