Ty Lee

Women's Basketball | 1/22/2019 10:27:00 PM

In a game that was closer than the score might otherwise indicate, the Lady Bears gave it their all, but in the end fell to the visiting Jones Lady Bobcats 64-51Tuesday night in MACJC South Division action.

A Ty Lee layup and Tootie Rankin free throw helped the Lady Bears take an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter. After the Lady Bobcats knotted the game on two occasions, the Lady Bears would go on to hold a 12-7 advantage at the end of the opening 10:00.

The teams traded baskets in the second quarter which featured four ties and three lead changes. With time winding down before the end of the half, Tootie Carter found the range on a short jumper to leave the Lady Bears (6-8, 1-4) on top 23-22 at the break.

The third quarter was much like the second with three ties and six lead changes. The Lady Bobcats (13-1, 5-0) took their largest lead of the half, 32-27, with 5:24 on the clock. But, the Lady Bears would come back to outscore the visitors 10-4 the rest the period. A Lee bucket with 0:45 showing left the Lady Bears with a 37-36 advantage at intermission.

The Lady Bobcats moved out to a 43-37 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Lady Bears cut the score to 45-42 on a Carter layup with 6:41 on the clock.

The Lady Bobcats then outscored the Lady Bears to take a 52-42 lead with 4:50 still to play. The Lady Bears would unfortunately be able to come no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Despite the loss, Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris said he was "so very proud of our team tonight. We battled an extremely talented and well-coached team for a long time."

"Ty made some very tough buckets," Harris went on, "(and) Tootie Carter was very good offensively. We need to convert at the line better the next time out."

Carter and Lee both scored 11 points to lead the Lady Bears' offense. Rankin also scored in double figures with 10 points. The Lady Bears made 15 of 26 free throws.

Destiney Haymer scored 15 points to lead the Lady Bobcats. She and her teammates combined to go 11-13 at the free throw line.

The Lady Bears hit the road for their next contest as they travel to Poplarville Thursday night to face Pearl River in a 5:30 South Division matchup.
