Lady Bears fall short against Gulf Coast

The Lady Bears dropped a tough MACJC South Division contest at home, 81-74, to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs Monday night.
 
After falling behind early in the opening quarter, a Jamaya Galloway trey and Tootie Rankin layup put the Lady Bears on top 5-3 with 7:34 on the clock.
 
An 18-2 run by Gulf Coast (6-4, 2-1) then put the visitors on top 18-7 with 3:08 showing and they would go on to lead 21-12 heading into the second quarter.
 
Gulf Coast extended their lead to 33-20 with 4:51 to play in the second stanza. A Galloway jumper and free throw then served as bookends to a 9-2 run by the Lady Bears that cut their deficit to 35-29 with 2:38 remaining in the half. The visitors would then lead by the same six-point margin, 40-34, at intermission.
 
Gulf Coast outscored the Lady Bears (6-6, 1-2) to open the third quarter to move out to a 45-34 lead with 8:27 on the clock. But, the Lady Bears fought back, tying the game, 49-49, on an Amari Pittman three pointer with 5:16 before the end of the quarter.
 
With 3:24 left in the third, Galloway's layup capped a 19-4 to give the Lady Bears a 53-49 lead. Gulf Coast would come back to score six of the final eight points of the quarter to go up 56-55.
 
Outscoring Gulf Coast 17-7 to open the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears took their largest lead of the night, 72-63, on a Tootie Carter three pointer with 4:16 left in the game.
 
Gulf Coast answered with a 10-0 run to go on top 73-72 with 1:36 still to play. After the Bears took a 74-73 lead, Gulf Coast would score the final eight points of the game to escape with the seven-point victory.
 
"Our battle back and (our) energy were great tonight," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Tootie Rankin and Amari shot the ball extremely well and Nia Henderson was tough inside." However, Harris concluded, "I believe we relaxed when we stretched the lead late."
 
Galloway scored 18 points, and had 8 assists, to pace the Lady Bears. Tootie Rankin totaled 15 points while Pittman had 12 and Tootie Carter 11 (Carter also had four blocked shots). The Lady Bears went 8-12 at the free throw line.
 
Breannah McCullah scored 18 points to lead Gulf Coast. She and her teammates combined to hit 16 of 20 free throws.
 
The Lady Bears hit the road for their next contest, traveling to Wesson Thursday night to face always-tough Co-Lin. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.
