Bears shutout Meridian to remain undefeated

Showing no ill effects of a two-week layoff, the Bears remained undefeated, and captured their first MACJC South Division contest, with a 8-0 home victory over the Meridian Eagles Tuesday afternoon.
 
Freshman Marcelo Carias put the Bears (4-0, 1-0 South) on top 1-0 with the first of his two goals in the game at the 16:33 mark. Marcus Connolly provided the assist, the first of his three in the game.
 
Connolly scored less than two minutes later to increase the Bears' lead to 2-0; PJ Irwin assisted.
 
Freshman Felipe Madero registered a hat trick for the Bears while Patrick Larsen and Joaquin Bermejillo both scored a goal. Bermejillo and Keven Florian both had an assist. Keeper Conner Smothers registered the shutout.
 
"It was a great team win," said Bears head coach Alex Brown. "I'm proud of my boys. We will enjoy it tonight, but our focus shifts to Gulf Coast now (the Bears play at Mississippi Gulf Coast Friday night at 7:00). We have a lot more work to do."
 
Continuing his post-game comments, Brown said, "We knew Patrick (Larsen) was going to draw a lot of attention so everyone else up top knew they had to step up and they did. We had five different goal scorers today which was incredible."
 
Speaking of Madero's day, Brown said, "Felipe works so hard for his teammates. I was glad to see him rewarded with some goals today."
 
With the loss, Meridian fell to 1-5, 0-2.
