Baseball | 3/17/2018 8:24:00 PM

Punishing their opponent's pitching for 19 runs on 26 hits, scoring in 12 of 14 at bats and getting exceptional pitching in both games, the Bears got MACJC play off to a roaring start Saturday afternoon with an 8-4, 11-3 doubleheader sweep of the visiting Holmes Bulldogs.

A two-RBI single from
Tyler White gave the Bears (5-8, 2-0) a 2-0 lead in their first at bat of game one. The score went to 3-0 in the bottom of the second when Payton Yawn reached on a one-out single and scored two batters later on a Paco Bello base hit.

In the Bears' third,
T Tez Cole led off with the first of his three hits in the game. He later scored on a passed ball to make the score 4-0. It went to 5-0 in the fourth on the second of Bello's three hits.

The Bears made it 6-0 in the fifth when
Michael Buck led off with a single (he later added a double) and scored three batters later on a ground out. Reaching on a fielder's choice in the seventh, White later scored on a passed ball to make the score 7-0.

Holmes avoided the shutout in the top of the eighth when Cole Johnson hit a two-run homer to make the score 7-2. The Bears then answered in the bottom of the frame when Yawn led off with a double (he later added a third hit) and scored on a passed ball to make the score 8-2.

Holmes (14-4, 0-2) added two more runs in the top of the ninth, but the Bears went on to claim the victory.

Brendon Baker went 7.1 innings, allowing a pair of runs on seven hits and a walk, to get the win for the Bears. Quartez Brown had a double in the game.

In the nightcap, Holmes sent six men to the plate in the top of the second on their way to a 3-0 lead. The Bears then answered in the bottom of the inning with RBI singles from Yawn and Bello to pull to within 3-2.

Buck sent the first pitch he saw over the left field wall in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3-3. An error, passed ball and
Kyle Singleton's two-RBI single put the Bears on top 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth.

In the Bears' fifth,
Reid Havard led off with a double and scored on Yawn's sacrifice fly to make the score 8-3. The Bears then added the final runs of the day in the bottom of the sixth on an error, two sacrifice flies and Nathan Yennie's second hit of the game.

Daren Smith went the full seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk, to get the win for the Bears. He struck out four batters. Brown had two singles in the game.

"I thought our kids really played hard today," said Bears head coach Ken Jackson. "It all starts on the mound; I thought our pitching was really superb. Brendon was excellent in game one, almost getting a complete game, and then Daren got us a complete game in game two."

"I thought that kind of set the tone for the day," Jackson continued. "And, obviously our offense really showed out today and swung the bats really well and we played solid defense."

The Bears return to action on March 21 when they travel to Decatur to face the East Central Warriors. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 first pitch.
