Southwest Baseball cuts ribbon on Alumni Stadium ahead of Coahoma series

Southwest Mississippi baseball hosted Coahoma in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18th.

Southwest won game one 6-4 and lost game two 3-8.

Before the series, the team welcomed Reggie Jones, President of the SMCC Board of Trustees, onto the field to do the honors of cutting the ribbon for Alumni Stadium.

Alden Spencer started on the mound for Southwest in game one.

Spencer pitched 1.2 innings with 2 strikeouts and 2 runs allowed.

Luke Simmons pitched the next 3.2 innings with 2 strikeout and no runs allowed.

Andrew Hoff pitched 0.2 innings with 1 strikeout.

Wyatt Garrett relieved before Easton Boyte took over on the mound.

Boyte pitched 2.0 innings with no hits or runs allowed and 1 strikeout and picked up the win for the Bears.

Nik Carney pitched the final 1.0 innings with no hits or runs allowed and 1 strikeout. Carney picked up the save in the process.

The Bears started off slow and found themselves down 4-2 after seven innings.

The 2 runs came in the sixth and seventh on singles by Hayes Loper and JD Hidalgo.

Down 4-2, the Bears mounted their comeback in the bottom of the eighth with 4 runs to take a 6-4 lead over Coahoma headed into the ninth.

Robbie Hokamp singled to start the inning and get a runner on base.

Drew Swan singled next to move a runner into scoring position.

Then, Luke Simmons doubled to score a run and move the score to 4-3.

Jonathan Miller hit a triple to score the remaining runners and take a 5-4 lead over Coahoma.

Cam Bolden singled to score Miller and extend the lead to 6-4.

Nik Carney came in in the ninth and put down three straight batters to secure the 6-4 win for the Bears.

Tanner Moore, Robbie Hokamp, Drew Swan, and Luke Simmons all had 2 hits. JD Hidalgo, Cam Bolden, Hayes Loper, Jonathan Miller, and Justin Domiano each had 1.

Jonathan Miller led the team with 2 RBIs. Hayes Loper, JD Hidalgo, Luke Simmons and Cam Bolden each had 1.

Jonathan Miller had a triple in game one. Luke Simmons had a double.

Cam Bolden and Tanner Moore each stole a base.

Dom Smith started on the mound for the Bears in game two.

Smith pitched 4.1 innings with 2 strikeouts and picked up the loss for Southwest.

Camp Segrest and Konnor Cazenave relieved before Will McLeod came in.

McLeod pitched 2.1 innings with 2 strikeouts and no hits or runs allowed.

Nathan Carter came in to pick up the final out of the seventh inning.

The Bear scoring started in the third inning when a JD Hidalgo single scored 2 runs with Southwest trailing 2-3.

A Justin Domiano double scored the 3rd and final Southwest run to move the score to 3-8 in favor of Coahoma in the fifth inning.

The Bears would go on to lose 3-8 in game two and split with Coahoma.

JD Hidalgo and Drew Swan led the team with 2 hits. Tanner Moore, Justin Domiano, Luke Simmons, and Cam Bolden each had 1 hit.

JD Hidalgo led with 2 RBIs, and Justin Domiano had 1.

"I thought we played solid all but one inning. Baseball is a weird game sometimes, and things just don't go your way. We fought hard to win the first game and let the second one get away from us in one inning. Sometimes that happens," said Head Coach Jack Edmonson.

"We were overwhelmed by the support at our Ribbon Cutting ceremony and are very thankful to have one of the best facilities in the state," said Coach Edmonson.

The Bears (27-19, 11-11*conference) will host Co-Lin on Wednesday, April 22nd in a doubleheader.
