Leading from start to finish, the Bears closed out the opening round of the annual Southwest/Coca-Cola Classic Monday night with an 81-70 win over the Jaguars of Southern-Shreveport.

The Bears took control of the game early, taking a 3-0 lead on a
Robert Boyd three pointer with less than 1:00 of the clock. A 16-4 run, capped by a pair of
Devon Benson free throws increased their lead to 16-4 with 14:11 before the end of the half.

A 12-2 run, capped by a
Roydell Brown bucket, gave the Bears (4-0) their largest lead of the first half, 40-12, with 6:46 on the clock. They went on to hold a 41-17 advantage at the end of the half.

Outscoring the Jaguars (2-4) 13-7 to open the second half, the Bears took their biggest lead of the night, 54-24, on a
Ricardo Lynch jumper with 15:59 left in the game. Maintaining a comfortable lead the rest of the way, the Bears saw themselves outscored 13-4 over the final 6:52 before ending the night with the 11-point win.

"I'm really excited about the way our defensive focus came out in the first half," said Bears head coach Thomas Gray. "I thought that initiated our offense. I think it all starts on the defensive end for us and this was the first game we came out with, I thought, a really good mindset defensively."

"I think can obviously learn to finish games a little bit better," Gray went on. "I thought we were a little too loose with the ball when they (the Jaguars) started picking up the pressure in the second half. But, overall, this was a huge team win."

Brown scored 16 points to lead all scorers in the game.
Antonio Cowart, Jr.., and Jeremy Harrell both scored 12 points. Boyd added 11 points while Benson and Lynch both registered 10 points. Benson led the Bears on the boards with nine rebounds while Charles Winston aided the victory with nine assists. The Bears made 12 of 21 free throws.

Dayton Artis topped the Jaguars' offense with 15 points. He and his teammates combined to go 9-15 from the free throw line.

The Bears close out the Coca-Cola Classic Tuesday night when they face Baton Rouge Community College. Tipoff is set for 7:15.
