The first half of MACJC South Division play ended on a sour note for the Lady Bears Monday night as they dropped a 71-61 decision to the visiting East Central Lady Warriors.

With the loss, the Lady Bears fell to 13-3 overall and, at 5-2, into a two-way tie with Co-Lin for second place in the Division. East Central moved to 14-2 and 6-1 and into a tie for first place with Jones County.

East Central held a 4-0 lead before
Teshia Jones' three-pointer made it 4-3 with 6:59 left in the first quarter. The visitors took a 16-11 lead with 2:48 on the clock and went on to a 19-15 advantage at the end of the quarter.

East Central led 25-19 before back-to-back jumpers from
Lillie Snowden pulled the Lady Bears back to within two points, 25-23, with 5:43 left before the half. The teams then traded points before going into intermission with East Central on top 33-30.

Snowden's bucket with less than 1:00 off the clock in the third quarter put the score at 33-32. East Central then went on a 21-8 run over the next 7:13 to push out to their biggest lead of the night, 54-40. Back-to-back three pointers from
Gabriella Cortez and Jones left the Lady Bears with a 57-46 deficit at the end of the third.

Capped by
Alissa Adam's jumper, the Lady Bears outscored East Central 7-2 to open the fourth quarter to draw back to within six points, 59-53, with 6:33 left in the game. That, however, would be as close as the Lady Bears would get the rest of the way as East Central went on to the 10-point win.

"Shot selection hurt us in the first half," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Not making shots and not crashing the offensive boards hurt us in the second. East Central is a well-coached team that plays with great intensity."

Cortez had 20 points and eight rebounds to pace the home team offense. Snowden and Jones also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Adam recorded seven assists. The Lady Bears were good on eight of 11 free throws.

East Central's Miracle Rushing led all scorers with 21 points. The visitors made 10 of 14 free throws.

The Lady Bears begin the second half of Division play Thursday night as they travel to Poplarville to face Pearl River. Tipoff is set for 5:30.
