Lady Bears fall short against visiting Jones County

Down 17 points late in the game, the Southwest Bears nearly pulled off the miracle comeback, but were unsuccessful as they dropped a tough 85-79 decision to visiting Jones County Thursday night.
 
A rare four-point play from
Eyonna Wolfe (Jackson, MS) gave the Lady Bears an early 4-2 lead in the contest. With 11:58 to play in the half, Teshia Jones (Stringer, MS) three-pointer put the home team up 17-12.
 
After the teams traded baskets over the next several minutes, free throws from Jones and
Talisa Sherman (Richland, MS) had the Lady Bears (7-8, 3-3) on top 32-30 with 3:19 on the clock. Jones County then scored six of the final seven points of the half to take a 36-33 lead into the intermission.
 
Jones County outscored the Lady Bears 13-6 to open the second half and pull to a 49-39 lead with 15:44 left in the game. With 11:36 remaining,
Madison Mault (Purvis, MS)t nailed a pair of free throws to pull the Lady Bears back to within five, 52-47.
 
Jones County (10-4, 4-2) then went on a 14-2 spurt to push out to a 66-49 lead with 8:18 on the clock. But, the Lady Bears were not ready to give up and they slowly worked themselves back into the game.
 

Cortney Epting (Jackson, MS) cut the Jones County lead to 77-69 with a jumper with 3:03 left in the game. Then, down 82-74 with 0:51 to play, Epting drilled a three pointer and Wolfe added a short jumper to make the score 83-29 with 0:06 left.
 
But, that would be it for the Lady Bears as Jones County added a pair of free throws to ease away with the six-point victory.
 
Jones led the Lady Bears with 21 points on the night while
Gabriella Cortez (Natchitoches, LA) and Sherman were also in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
 
Wolfe added nine points, along with six assists, with Epting totaling eight points. Mault recorded seven points and
Lillie Snowden (Zachary, LA) and Tatyana Turner (Summit, MS) both had four.Aaliyah Williams (Bassfield, MS) chipped in one point. The Lady Bears made 20 of 33 free throws.
 
Jones County's Taylor Baudoin led all scorers with 24 points. The visitors made 23 of 26 free throws.
 
The Lady Bears return to the court Monday night in Decatur when they face South Division foe East Central. Tipoff is set for 5:30.
