Homestanding Bears drop decision to 10th-ranked Jones County

Despite the performance of freshman Lafayette Rutledge (Gautier, MS), the visiting Jones County Bobcats proved to be too much for the Southwest Bears Thursday night as they left Summit with a 77-64 win.
 
Rutledge hit eight of his 13 three-point attempts and was nine of 16 overall from the field to top all scorers with 26 points.
 
The game was tight in the early going with three ties in the first 13:23. A pair of Xavion Dillon (Tylertown, MS) free throws gave the Bears an early 2-0 lead and a Dillon jumper had them up 8-6 with 15:36 left in the half.
 
Jones County (13-0, 6-0), ranked 10th in the NJCAA, took control of the game at that point. Going on a 12-0 run, the visitors took an 18-8 lead with 9:57 to play in the half and held a 38-16 advantage at the break.
 
Jones County quickly increased their lead to 46-20 early in the second half. A 10-2 run by the Bears (6-8, 3-3), highlighted by a pair of Rutledge treys, later lowered their deficit to 56-41 with 10:09 to go.
 
Three Rutledge three pointers sparked a 12-4 run by the Bears that brought them back to within 11, 75-64, with only seconds remaining. Jones County added a pair of free throws with 0:01 on the clock to finish the scoring.
 
Dillon finished with a double-double for the Bears, picking up 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jaylen Moore (Gulfport, MS) totaled nine points and added seven assists. David Burrell (Milwaukee, WI) netted five points while Trent Jeffries (Gulfport, MS) and CJ Polite (Charlotte, NC) both scored four. The Bears hit 16 of 19 free throws.
 
Bryce Jones led the Jones County offense with 23 points. He and his teammates were 6-13 from the free throw line.
 
The Bears hit the road for their next game, traveling to Decatur Monday night for a scheduled 7:30 MACJC South Division matchup at East Central.
