Bears bow out of state tournament

The Southwest Bears' stay in the MACJC state tournament at Itawamba was, unfortunately, a short one. Taking on the host Indians Monday night, the Bears were defeated in a high-scoring affair, 103-91.

Despite the loss, the Bears (12-12) still have more basketball to play. They will participate in next week's NJCAA Region 23 tournament at Mississippi College, taking on the Jones County Bobcats on Thursday. Game time has not yet been determined.

The first half of the game was a tight one with two ties and eight lead changes in the first 8:22 of play. Itawamba raced out to a 6-0 lead before the Bears came back to take a 10-8 lead on Deione Weeks' three-pointer with 15:50 to play.

A Corey Williams bucket with 12:25 to go in the half put the Bears on top, for what proved to be the last time, 20-19. Itawamba then regained the lead, 22-20, on Kevis Fleming's three-pointer with 11:38 on the clock and held a 51-41 lead at the half.

A pair of baskets from Williams and one from Twymond Howard helped the Bears cut Itawamba's lead down to 53-47 early in the second half. But, the hosts quickly went on a 12-1 tear to push the score to 73-52 with 13:10 left.

Going on a 20-10 run, the Bears then made a game of it again as they pulled back to within 10 points, 95-85, with 1:55 remaining. That would be as close as they would get, however, as the Indians advanced to the semi-finals with the 12-point victory.

Southwest's Twymond Howard led all players with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Jaylen Moore and Williams both finished with 16 points while Chris Jones was also in double figures with 13 points.

Xavion Dillon and Weeks both netted eight points in the game with Christian Robbins adding two. The Bears hit 18 of 31 free throws.

Itawamba was led by Alex Anderson's 26 points. The Indians were nearly perfect from the free throw line, making 26 of 29.
