Lady Bears fall at Meridian, wait for playoff decision

The regular season came to an end for the Southwest Lady Bears Thursday night as they dropped a 79-69 decision on the road to the Meridian Lady Eagles. They will now have to play a wait and see game to find out if they will advance to the MACJC state tournament next week.

Southwest ended the campaign at 17-6 and 9-5 in the South Division. They are locked into a tie for fourth place with Co-Lin who ended the year at 16-7 and 9-5. Due to a complicated tie-breaking system, it had not been determined as of late Thursday night which team would advance to the playoffs.

Meridian ended the regular season as co-champions of the South with Jones County and Pearl River. With the tie-breaker, Jones County will go into the state tournament as the South's number one team.

The Lady Bears held the lead for only 2:14 Thursday night. An April Levy basket had them on top 7-4 with 14:50 left in the first half. But, two quick jumpers from Meridian put the hosts on top 8-07 with 12:50 on the clock and they would hold the lead the rest of the night.

A layup by Feleshia Walters with 4:22 on the clock gave the Lady Eagles a 25-15 advantage and they took a 27-21 lead into the locker room at the break.

In the second half, Meridian extended their lead to 15 points, 37-22, with 17:32 to play. The Lady Bears fought back to within five points, 55-50, when Tee Myers nailed a pair of free throws with 5:46 on the clock. But, that would be as close as it would get the rest of the way as Meridian secured a playoff spot with the 10-point victory.

Katrina Littlepage led four Lady Bears in double figures with 16 points in the game. Levy scored 15 points while Myers totaled 13 and Talisa Sherman picked up 12.

Fredrikah Wilson netted nine points and Madison Mault scored four. The Lady Bears hit 24 of 34 free throws.

Victoria Stewart scored 24 points for Meridian to lead all scorers. The Lady Eagles made good on 22 of 28 free throws.
