Box Score----/documents/2014/12/9//iTS_08_12_2014.pdf?id=536

The Southwest Lady Bears closed out the 2014 portion of their schedule on a high note with a 75-54 home win over the Lady Bulldogs of Hinds Monday night.

With the win, the Lady Bears moved to 5-4 on the season and, more importantly, 2-0 in the MACJC's South Division. Hinds, meanwhile, fell to 1-8 and 0-2.

Three pointers from
Eyonna Wolfe (Jackson, MS, Provine)  and Talisa Sherman (Richland, MS, Richland)  gave the Lady Bears an early 6-0 lead. An Erica Newsome (Gulfport, MS, Gulfport)  bucket with 10:56 left in the first half pushed the lead to 20 points, 24-4, and a Newsome layup with 4:03 on the clock made it 33-10. The Lady Bears then took a 37-17 lead into the locker room at the end of the half.

Hinds made a comeback attempt at the start of the second half, scoring the first 11 points to make the score 37-28 with 17:03 to play in the game. But, an old-fashioned three-point play by Newsome ended the Hinds run and led to a 14-3 Lady Bears run to push the lead back to 20 points, 51-31, with 12:36 remaining.

Hinds was never seriously able to mount a challenge after that, coming no closer than 14 points (65-51) the rest of the way, as the Lady Bears went on to the 21-point win.

"I'm really proud of the win, which brings us to 2-0 in South play," said Lady Bears' head man Brent Harris. "But, we have to have more consistent effort and focus."

Newsome was nearly perfect on the night in leading the Lady Bears' attack. Hitting eight of 10 field goals and five of seven free throws, Newsome finished the game with 21 points. She also led the Lady Bears on the boards with nine rebounds.

Sherman,
Erica Newsome (Gulfport, MS, Gulfport) and Teshia Jones (Stringer, MS, Stringer) all scored11 points in the game while Lillie Snowden (Zachary, LA, Zachary) added 10.

Wolfe and
Aaliyah Williams (Bassfield, MS, Bassfield) both netted four points with Tatyana Turner (Summit, MS, North Pike) recording two points and Madison Mault (Purvis, MS, Lamar Christian) one. The Lady Bears made good on 19 of 31 free throws.

Felicia Guynes and Te'Ara Thompson both scored 12 points to lead Hinds. The Lady Bulldogs hit eight of 18 free throws.

The Lady Bears now take time off for final exams and the Christmas/New Year's holidays before hosting Mississippi Delta on January 5.
