Northwest defeats Lady Bears

The Southwest Lady Bears played hard Tuesday afternoon, but were unable to overcome a poor shooting performance as they fell to the Northwest Lady Rangers, 79-70, on the final day of the Northeast Tipoff Classic in Booneville.

Northwest took an early 13-7 lead before the Lady Bears scored six straight and took a 14-13 lead on a pair of Talisa Sherman free throws with 12:12 left in the first half. Bethany Lytle then hit a pair of free throws to ignite a 15-2 run and put Northwest on top by 12, 28-16, with 7:58 on the clock.

Northwest (2-0) later pushed their lead to 14 points, 34-20, with 4:51 to go in the half. The Lady Bears were able to lower their deficit to nine points on two occasions before the half, on layups from Cortney Epting and Erica Newsome, but went into the break trailing 42-31.

After Northwest extended their lead to 13 points, 46-33, early in the second half, the Lady Bears outscored their opponents 15-7 and pulled to within five points, 53-48, on Teshia Jones' three-pointer with 12:30 left in the game.

That would prove to be as close as the Lady Bears (0-2) would get as Northwest then went on a 16-6 scoring spree to push their lead to 15, 69-54, with 6:51 left on the clock. The Lady Bears were able to get back to within six points three times, but could not get any closer as Northwest went on to the nine-point win.

"I thought we played hard in the second half," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "I thought we lacked energy early and it cost us in the end. But, we have a lot of (game) film to watch and we will improve."

Epting had 14 points, along with six steals, to pace the Lady Bears. Jones and Madison Mault both added 10 points. Newsome and Sherman both scored eight points while Lillie Snowden had six (along with 10 rebounds).

Ke' Asia Gray and Eyonna Wolfe both added four points and Aaliyah Williams netted two. The Lady Bears hit 12 of 18 free throws.

Sara Lytle led four Lady Rangers in double figures, and all scorers, with 17 points in the game. The Lady Rangers were good on 21 of 33 charity shots.

The Lady Bears will take a few days off before returning to action on November 10 when they travel to Moorhead to face Mississippi Delta. Tipoff is set for 6:00.
