Lady Bears overwhelm Lady Trojans in Moorhead, 77-53

Leading the entire night, the Southwest Lady Bears picked up their first win of the season in a big way Monday night in Moorhead as they overwhelmed the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans, 77-53.

The game was close in the early going. The Lady Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Madison Mault's three-pointer and were on top 12-9 with 12:21 to play in the first half.

The Lady Bears (1-2) then began firing on all cylinders. Buckets from Lillie Snowden and Eyonna Wolfe served as bookends to a 17-0 run, putting the Lady Bears on top 29-9 with 4:50 on the clock. They held a 35-18 lead at the half.

The second half belonged solidly to the Lady Bears. After seeing Mississippi Delta (1-2) cut their lead to 16 points, 41-25, with 15:05 on the clock, the Lady Bears then outscored their hosts 18-4 over the next 5:11 to push their advantage to 30 points, 59-29, with 9:56 left in the game. After that, Mississippi Delta could come no closer than 24 points the remainder of the game as the Lady Bears left town with the easy victory.

Southwest head coach Brent Harris the win was big for the Lady Bears "because it was a road win. Good teams are measured by what you do on the road, I think. We missed an opportunity to get one (a win) last week (in the Northeast Classic) so tonight to bounce back and get one was important."

Snowden paced the Lady Bears' offense with 13 points in the game along with five rebounds. Gabriella Cortez was also in double figures with 12 points. She also added six rebounds.

Mault scored nine points while Erica Newsome and Wolfe both added eight points (Newsome topped the Lady Bears with 10 rebounds) and Cortney Epting registered seven points. Talisa Sherman and Tatyana Turner both netted six points, Teshia Jones had four and Ke' Asia Gray and Aaliyah Williams both had two. The Lady Bears made 12 of 17 free throws.

Mississippi Delta's Eugenia Gilliam led all scorers in the game with 15 points. The Lady Trojans were good on 23 of 33 charity shots.

The Lady Bears make their home debut Thursday night when they entertain the Lady Tigers of LSU-Eunice. Tipoff is set for 6:00.
