Lady Bears move to 14-2 on the season with 52-43 home win over Meridian

Stand alone atop the MACJC South

The Southwest Lady Bears picked up their 14th win of the season Monday as they defeated the visiting Meridian Lady Eagles 52-43. At 6-1, the Lady Bears stand alone in first place in the MACJC's South Division. Meridian fell to 13-3 and, at 5-2, into a three-way tie for second place in the South with Jones County and Pearl River.

The Lady Bears seemed on the verge of a blowout win in the first half. A pair of free throws by April Levy put them on top 19-5 with 13:46 left in the first half. Later, a three-pointer by Madison Mault had the Lady Bears on top 28-11 with 3:34 on the clock and they took a 30-16 lead into the locker room at the half.

Meridian stayed tough in the second half and came to within eight points, 48-40, with 2:04 to play in the game. But, the Lady Bears' bend, but don't break defense, would not let the visitors come any closer. A pair of Katrina Littlepage free throws with 0:10 on the clock sealed the deal.

Levy topped all scorers with 22 points for Southwest. Mault scored eight points while Courtney Epting seven points. Littlepage and Tee Myers both scored six points while Talisa Sherman netted two and Fredrikah Wilson added one. The Lady Bears hit nine of 11 free throws.

Kristen Sampson led the Meridian offense with 16 points. The Lady Eagles made good on 11 of 16 charity shots.
