Lady Bears end the season with a sweep at Hinds

The Lady Bears ended the 2013 season on a high note Friday as they swept a doubleheader from host Hinds Community College, 5-1 and 5-1.
 
With the sweep, Southwest ends the season with an overall record of 20-24 and a MACJC South Division mark of 10-14. Hinds ended the year at 4-40, 0-24.
 
Hinds scored their only run of game one in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0. The Lady Bears took a 2-1lead in their half of the third inning when Chelsea Nette reached base on a one-out single, the first of her two in the game, and Harley Myers followed with a two-run home run to left field.
 
Southwest used four hits and a sacrifice fly to score the final runs of the game in the sixth inning. Marissa Jenkins led off with a double hit to left, her second two-bagger of the game, and scored on Grace Bravata’s two-base hit. With one out, Mary Margaret McLaurin doubled to left, scoring Bravata. McLaurin advanced to third on a Katie Allen single and scored on Myers’ sacrifice fly.
 
Kristen Gekler pitched four innings to pick up the win for the Lady Bears. She surrendered one run on four hits and struck out one batter. Carrie Phillips pitched the final three innings, giving up one hit while striking out one and walking one. Myers also had a double in the game.
 
The Lady Bears led 2-0 after four innings of the finale. Allen reached base on an error to start the third inning and scored four batters later on a Jenkins ground out. In the fourth, Bravata walked with one out and scored on Nette’s single to left.
 
Southwest extended their lead to 5-0 in the sixth inning when Nette tripled, her third hit of the game, to send Amy Lea and Mandie Szigeti to the plate with two outs. Nette then scored on Myers’ double to centerfield. Hinds scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Rachel Smith pitched the entire game to pick up the win in her final outing as a member of the Lady Bears. She gave up one run on five hits while striking out nine batters and walking one.
 
Jenkins and Allen both had singles in the game.
