Lady Bears drop 70-63 decision at East Central

The Lady Bears closed out the regular season on a down note Thursday night as they dropped a 70-63 decision to home standing East Central. The Bears, however, swept the season series against the East Central men with a 64-59 victory.

The Lady Bears closed out the campaign at 14-9, 7-5. They begin play Monday in the MACJC state tournament in Poplarville. Their seeding, either second or third from the South, will depend on the outcome of Thursday’s Hinds-Gulf Coast game. Tournament brackets will be released later this week.

Still fighting for a spot in the upcoming state tournament, the Lady Warriors (8-14, 5-6) exploded out of the gate and leading by 14, 30-16, with 7:18 left in the first half, seemed to have things well in hand. But, with Katrina Littlepage scoring 10 points and April Levy picking up nine, the Lady Bears outscored their hosts 23-11 the rest of the half to trail by only two, 41-39, at the break.

Buckets by Elayne Robinson and Alexis Avery helped Southwest force two ties early in the second half. But, a Xzandra Dowd layup gave the Lady Warriors the lead for good, 46-44, with 15:55 left in the game. The Lady Bears would stay close the rest of the way, but were never able to get the push they needed to overcome the East Central defense.

“We dug too big of a deficit early,” said Southwest head coach Brent Harris, “but, I was proud of the way we fought back. It was a good game to play before the (state) tournament, because East Central is a good team. We’re going to have to do the little things to compete (in the tournament).”

Littlepage notched a double-double, with 20 points and 10 rebounds, to lead the way for Southwest. Levy also scored in double figures, with 14 points, as did Chicurial Hill, with 10.

Cassie Berry added seven points for Southwest while Avery had five. Fredrikah Wilson chipped in three points. Robinson and Tee Myers both scored two. The Lady Bears made 17 of 26 free throws.

Dowd had 22 points and 14 rebounds to pace the East Central offense. The Lady Warriors made good on 18 of 28 free throws.
