Bears' win streak stops at seven

Team remains in second place

Sophomore Night was not so nice for the Bears Thursday as they saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end with a 71-62 loss to visiting Hinds. Things went much better for the Lady Bears as they closed out the home campaign with a 76-55 win over the Hinds ladies.

The Bears dropped to 14-8 overall and 7-4. Already assured of a berth in state, they maintained their hold on second place in the South thanks to Jones County’s loss to Gulf Coast.

Southwest closes out the regular season on the road Monday when they travel to Decatur to face East Central. Game times are 6:00 for the women and 8:00 for the men.

With Deville Smith scoring seven points to give them a 16-8 lead, with 13:44 left in the half, the Bears seemed ready to extend their winning streak to eight games. But, a 14-0 run put Hinds (14-7, 5-5) put the visitors on top 22-16 with 8:12 on the clock and they went into the break with a 33-24 lead.

Outscoring Southwest 14-4 to open the second half, the Bulldogs extended their lead to19 points, 47-28, with 14:57 to play. Unable to come any closer than 10 points the rest of the way, the Bears saw their hopes of a first-place division finish come to an end and, with it, their hopes of hosting the state tournament.

“I’m really disappointed in our effort and focus,” said Southwest head coach Casey Carter, “and that’s 100 percent my responsibility. For some reason, we couldn’t figure out the right formula tonight.”

“It takes a special group of guys to stay focused when you’ve had the success we’ve had over the last few weeks,” Carter went on. “We did not handle that success very well tonight. (But) we will get better over the next couple of days and be better Monday night (at East Central”.

Smith led the way for the Bears with a game-high 19 points. Donovan Ross was also in double figures, with 14 points, as was Mark Bridgewater, with 11 points.

Devin Flowers added nine points in the game while Deione Weeks had three. Mikel Henry, Quintarius Porter and Devion Smith all had two. Southwest made 18 of 23 free throws.

Hinds was led by Dominique Brown’s 15 points. The Bulldogs hit 17 of 23 charity shots.
