Lady Bears edge closer to playoff berth with win over Pearl River

The Lady Bears began a special night for Southwest basketball in a big way as they defeated visiting Pearl River 59-50. Southwest closed out the night with a thrilling 68-66 win over the Wildcats.

At halftime of the men’s game, Southwest recognized the members of the 1962-63 Southwest men’s team on the 50th anniversary of their winning the state championship.

With their win, the Lady Bears moved to 13-8 on the season and, at 6-4, remain in third place in the MACJC South Division. While not yet clinching a spot, the win also moved them to a position in the upcoming MACJC state tournament.

Southwest closes out the home portion of the schedule Thursday with a visit from Hinds. The ladies tip off the night at 5:30 with the men following at 7:15.

The Lady Bears took control of their game early and moved out to a 38-26 lead at the break. But, much like in their earlier meeting, they just could not seem to shake the Lady Wildcats (7-11, 3-7).

Pearl River fought their way back into the contest and, thanks to a 22-11 run, found themselves down only one point, 49-48, late in the contest. After a pair of April Levy free throws put the Lady Bears up 51-48 with just over 5:40 to play, the visitors again came back to within one (51-50 with 5:32 showing).

But, Katrina Littlepage basket gave the Lady Bears a 53-50 lead with 3:28 on the clock, and Pearl River was unable to mount a serious challenge the remainder of the way. The win provided a small measure of revenge for Southwest, after being on the wrong side of a 56-55 game in Poplarville in their previous meeting.

“We won tonight with our team defense in the second half,” said Southwest head coach Brent Harris. “We held the lead by a point for what seemed like five possessions (during the second half). Cassie (Berry) hit two really big shots late, showing sophomore leadership. I am very proud of this group.”

Littlepage paced the Southwest offense with 15 points and 10 assists  on the night. Levy was also in double figures, with 12 points, as was Fredrikah Wilson, with 10.

Berry added eight points for the Lady Bears while Tee Myers and Elayne Robinson both had four. Milesha McNulty and Katelyn Whaley both netted three. Southwest hit 10 of 11 free throws.

Kalisha Washington led Pearl River with 18 points. The Lady Wildcats were six of eight from the free throw line.
