Bears pick up tough win at Northwest

Trailing virtually the entire first half, the Southwest Bears withstood the pressures of playing at always-tough Northwest Mississippi and came away with a season-opening, 91-88 win Monday night. The Bears return to the court Thursday when they make their home debut against Bishop State (Mobile, AL) with tipoff set for 7:15.

Northwest looked ready to put the game away early as Chris Harris and Tristan Moore combined to give the hosts a 6-0 lead less than one minute into the game. The Bears finally got on the board when Christian Robbins hit a jumper to make the score 6-2 with 19:10 to play in the first half.

After Northwest went back up by five, 14-9, with 14:38 on the clock, a Jalen Moore three-pointer and two free throws knotted the game at 14-14 with 13:33 to play. The Rangers then outscored the Bears 8-2 to take another six-point lead, 22-16, with 10:32 before the half. But, the Bears were determined and fought back to tie the game at 33-all on Twymond Howard's bucket with 5:14 on the clock. Scoring eight of the next 15 points, the Rangers took a 41-38 lead into the locker room at the end of the half.

In the second half, it was Southwest that seemed ready to put the game away. After seeing Northwest go up by five, 43-38, the Bears went on a 19-6 run, capped by Jamal Hester's jumper, to take a 67-54 lead with 10:55 left in the game. But, the Rangers would not go away quietly as they went on a 19-6 run of their own to knot the game at 77-77 with 7:08 to play.

The game was tied three more times in the next 3:00 before Northwest took their final lead of the night, 81-79, on Dajon Reno's layup with 4:03 to go in the game. The Bears regained the lead, 82-81, when Howard nailed a three-pointer with 2:08 to remaining and went up by six, 87-81, with 2:02 left.

The Rangers were not dead yet, however, as they pulled back to within one, 89-88, on Rashon Coleman's trey with 0:16 on the clock. After two missed Southwest free throws, the Rangers had a chance to win the game but were unable to do so. Deione Weeks drilled two free throws with 0:06 to go to seal the deal for the Bears.

"Nobody really made a run in the first half," said Southwest head coach Casey Carter. "We (both teams) were trying to figure each other out (and) get used to how the officials were calling the game. We were trying to figure out our team and Northwest was trying to figure out their team.'

"Finally, in the second half, we got into a groove," Carter went on. "Deione Weeks kind of sparked that, made a couple of threes. We were able to get that lead of 13 points. As a coach, you would hope we could just build on that and coast to victory. But, obviously, they (the Rangers) made a run to cut it (the lead) back and make it tight and I was just proud of the way our guys finished at the end."

The Bears' Moore led all scorers with 17 points on the night. Weeks totaled 16 points while Chris Jones had 15. Howard had a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Xavion Dillon netted nine points for the Bears while Robbins had eight and Hester and Corey Williams both scored six. Donovan James registered two points. The Bears made 30 of 53 free throws.

The Rangers' Moore led his squad with 15 points. He and his teammates combined to make 29 of 40 free throws.
