Bears vs. Meridian

Men's Basketball Michael D. Gunnell, Southwest Sports Information

Bears win third straight

The Bears overcame a slow start to pick up their third straight win, 72-52 at Meridian, Monday night. The Lady Bears, unfortunately, were unable to recover from their slow start and fell to the host Lady Eagles, 69-55.

The split leaves both Southwest teams with overall records of 10-7. They are both also even in the MACJC South Division, at 3-3, as the second round of division play begins Thursday. Southwest will travel to Ellisville to face Jones County. Game times are 6:00 for the ladies and 8:00 for the men.

The Bears’ slow start allowed Meridian (1-22) to make a game of it in the first half. But, after trailing 22-19 with 6:00 to play in the first half, regained the advantage, 25-24, on Devin Flowers’ jumper with 4:02 on the clock and went on to 35-27 halftime lead.

Southwest’s slow start in the second half allowed the Eagles to cut two 10-point deficits down to four and seven points. But, a 20-3 run capped by a Deione Weeks free throw, allowed the Bears to explode out to a 67-43 lead with 5:41 to play and cruise to the win.

“Even though it was ugly at times,” said Southwest head coach Casey Carter, “you’re always happy with a road win, especially by 20 points. We weren’t focused for 40 minutes, but we did enough to get the job done. I’m proud to see guys like Flowers, (Corey) Williams and Weeks have a productive night when some of our main guys didn’t.”

Flowers, along with Donovan Ross, led the Bears in scoring with 18 points. Weeks was also in double figures with 17 points. Williams added eight points while Deville Smith chipped in seven. Smith also dished out six assists and had five steals. Mark Bridgewater and Tyree McDonald both scored two. Southwest made good on 11 of 16 free throws.

T J Jones scored 18 points to pace Meridian. The Eagles hit eight of 14 free throws.
