Lady Bears extend winning streak with victory over rival Co-Lin

Southwest picked up two huge Southwest Division wins in front of a near standing-room only home crowd Monday night with a sweep of arch rival Co-Lin. The Lady Bears picked up their fourth straight win, and first over Co-Lin in several years, 60-59, while the Bears emerged victorious 65-58.

Southwest takes to the road Thursday when the teams travel to Poplarville to face Pearl River. The ladies tip the night off at 5:00 with the men set to follow at 7:00.

The Lady Bears (8-5, 1-2 South) fell behind early in the ladies’ game, 5-2, before coming back to tie the game at 5-5 on Alexis Avery’s three-pointer with 16:10 to play in the first half. Continuing an 11-2 run, they then went up 16-7 on a Katrina Littlepage basket with 12:50 left in the half.

Co-Lin (10-3, 2-1) fought back to within two points on three occasions, but the Lady Bears managed to take a 32-25 lead into the locker room at the break.

The Lady Wolves came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, opening the final 20:00 on a 21-9 run, to go up 46-37 with 11:21 left in the game. But, Southwest would not surrender and managed to climb back into the game.

Outscoring the visitors 17-8, the Lady Bears knotted the game at 54-54 on a Littlepage free throw with 4:30 on the clock. After the Lady Wolves went back up, 57-54, with 3:50 to play, Southwest then tied the game at 57-57 on a Fredrikah Wilson bucket with 3:11 left.

Littlepage nailed a three-pointer with 2:07 to play, putting the Lady Bears up 60-57. Co-Lin then pulled to within one point on Vintrice Briggs’ jumper with 1:43 to play, but was unable to find the winning shot down the stretch.

“I’m very proud of the way we kept our composure tonight in adverse situations,” said Southwest head coach Brent Harris. “Katrina (Littlepage) showed some toughness and made some big plays. Fredrikah (Wilson) battled inside and Cassie (Berry) played a very intelligent game. (Assistant) Coach Chi (Mitchell) deserves lot of credit for getting us ready to play.”

Littlepage hit eight of 12 free throws and was 4-4 from the free throw line to lead the Lady Bears, and all scorers, with 22 points on the night. Wilson and April Levy were also in double figures with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

Berry added four points while Avery had three. Tee Myers and Elayne Robinson both registered two points. Southwest hit 19 of 27 free throws.

Briggs led the Co-Lin offense with 19 points. The Lady Wolves hit six of nine free throws.
