Bears victorious over Co-Lin, 65-58

Southwest picked up two huge Southwest Division wins in front of a near standing-room only home crowd Monday night with a sweep of arch rival Co-Lin. The Bears were 65-58 winners while the Lady Bears won a nail-biter, 60-59, for their fourth straight win and first over Co-Lin in several years.

Southwest takes to the road Thursday when the teams travel to Poplarville to face Pearl River. The ladies tip the night off at 5:00 with the men set to follow at 7:00.

The Bears (7-6, 1-2) exploded out to a 19-2 lead in the men’s game and appeared on the verge of a huge blowout of Co-Lin (2-11, 0-3). Devin Flowers’ slam dunk began the scoring spree with 18:02 on the clock and his free throw concluded it with 11:50 showing.

Co-Lin found their offense and drew back to within nine points, 32-23, with 0:40 left in the half. The Bears then took that score into the locker room.

Co-Lin pulled to within three points, 32-29, with a 6-0 run to open the second half. A 10-2 run, capped by Mark Bridgewater’s three-pointer with 15:32 to play, then put the Bears’ lead back to double digits at 42-31.

The Wolves made several “mini-runs” during the rest of the half and managed to pull to within five points, 59-54, with 1:07 left in the game. But, Southwest managed to regain their bearings each time and held on for the win.

“I was really proud of the way we were able to start the game,” said Bears’ head coach Casey Carter. “We had not brought that determination and effort to start a game all year and that was by far the difference in the game. I am thankful for the people who came out and provided the atmosphere we needed to get off to that great start.”

“I’m really proud of the effort Deville Smith gave us on both ends (of the court) tonight,” Carter continued. “He sparked us and all the rest of the guys responded. We will enjoy this one tonight, but starting tomorrow we have to get a lot better.”

Smith led the way for the Bears with 15 points on the night. Donovan Ross was also in double figures, with 12 points, as was Bridgewater, with 11.

Flowers scored nine points in the game while Deione Weeks added eight. Corey Williams netted six and Quintarius Porter four. The Bears hit 21 of 30 free throws.

Co-Lin’s Tavin Cummings led all scorers with 22 points. The Wolves were 16 of 19 from the free throw line.
