Bears vs. Holmes

Men's Basketball Michael D. Gunnell, Southwest Sports Information

Bears fall hard at Holmes

The Bears dropped their second game of the season to Holmes Thursday night as they fell 84-69 in Goodman. The Southwest ladies were more fortunate as they swept the season series against Holmes with a 63-61 overtime win.

Southwest will return to the court Monday when they host their arch-rivals, the Lady Wolves and Wolves of Co-Lin. The ladies’ game is set for 5:30 with the men to follow at 7:15.

The first few minutes of their game gave no indication of what was to come for the Southwest men (6-6). On top 3-0 thanks to a jumper and free throw from Donovan Ross, the Bears built their lead to 14-8 with 13:55 left in the first half.

But, a 12-2 run gave Holmes a 20-16 lead with 10:21 to play in the first half. The Bulldogs then outscored Southwest 23-8 to go up by 19 points, 43-24, with 1:56 left in the half. The hosts took a 46-28 lead into the locker room at the break.

The second half was all Bulldogs as they built their lead to as many as 21 points. A 79-67 score, resulting from a Quintarius Porter basket with 1:28 left in the game, was as close as Southwest could come.

“We knew going in that this was a team that was very physical,” said Southwest head coach Casey Carter, “because that is the reason they beat us the first time (78-70 on November 26) and it was the reason they beat us tonight also and we couldn’t do anything about it.”

“We only had a few guys who wanted to match their (the Bulldogs’) intensity,” Carter continued, “and they were out there for longer periods of time that they needed to be which also made us not as effective. Give Holmes credit. We got beat by a good team tonight.”

Porter and Ross both scored 17 points to lead the Bears while Deville Smith was also in double figures with 10 points. Deione Weeks added eight points and Mark Bridgewater netted seven. Devin Flowers and Devion Smith both had four points and Mikel Henry registered two. Southwest hit 13 of 23 free throws.

Holmes’ Cody James had 19 points to lead all scorers. The Bulldogs made 17 of 25 free throws.
