Bears shutout Co-Lin for first South Division victory

Southwest picked up two much-needed wins on the soccer field Saturday as the Lady Bears defeated visiting Co-Lin 4-0 and the Bears were 3-0 victors.

With the win, the Southwest women moved to 2-5 on the season and 1-3 in the MACJC South Division. The Southwest men are now 1-5-1 and 1-2-1.

The Bears held a 2-0 lead at the half of their game. Bryan Stewart-Bennett scored the first goal at 13:00, with an assist from Conner Masters. Jake Saltalamacchia then made the score 2-0 with his fourth goal of the season at 36:00. Cody Mills assisted. The lead remained 2-0 until Stewart-Bennett picked up his second goal of the game, assisted by Mike Barlow, at 87:00.

Goalies Ryan Willcutt saved all five goals against him in the second half to help record the shutout. Will Evans played the first half, but had no shots on goal against him.

“It’s nice to see everything come together for the guys and finally scoring on some of the opportunities we’re creating. We had a big game out of Bryan.”

Southwest hits the road for their next games when they travel to Decatur on Tuesday to face East Central. Game times are 2:00 for the women and 4:00 for the men.
