Smith tosses no-hitter in Lady Bears' split with East Central

The 2012 MACJC softball season ended on a mixed note for the Southwest Lady Bears as they split a South Division doubleheader with visiting East Central. The Lady Bears took game one 1-0 behind the no-hit performance of freshman pitcher Rachel Smith, but East Central gained the split with a 5-1 win in the finale.

Southwest ended the year 9-27 overall and 6-18 in the division while East Central finished with a mark of 31-13 and 15-9. The Lady Warriors will advance to the state playoffs next week.

Southwest picked up the only run of the opener in the bottom of the first inning when Brooke Szigeti led off by being hit by a pitch. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by her sister, Mandy Szigeti, Brooke scored on a two-out single by Grace Bravata. The only other hit of the game came when Mandy Szigeti singled in the third inning.

Smith, tossing what is possibly the first no-hitter in Southwest history, struck out four batters while walking only one. After the game, she said “I didn’t realize (I had) it until after the game when Coach Johnson told me. It feels really good to be working hard the whole season and finally have a no-hitter.”

Game two was not quite as kind to Southwest as East Central held a 5-0 lead after four innings. The Lady Bears picked up their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Anissia Franklin reached base on a one-out walk, moved to second on a Victoria Price single and scored on Mandy Szigeti’s base hit.

Smith took the loss in the second game, allowing all five runs on nine hits. She struck out two batters and walked two. Brooke Szigeti had two doubles before leaving the game with an injury. Katie Allen and Grace Bravata also hit safely.
Before the game, a ceremony was held honoring the Southwest sophomore players. Aseye Attipoe, Camden Graham, Tipheri Grimes and Brooke Szigeti all played the final game of their Southwest career.
