Lady Bears fall short against Gulf Coast

A second-half rally fell short for the Southwest ladies as Gulf Coast held on to win 73-65 in Thursday night MACJC basketball action in Summit. The Southwest men pulled off a 72-71 upset win over Gulf Coast in the finale.

Finding themselves behind for all but 33 seconds of the first half, the Lady Bears (3-18, 0-10) went into the locker room at the end of the first 20:00 with a 40-20 deficit.

In the second half, Gulf Coast (11-10, 5-6) extended their advantage to 24 points, 44-20, with 16:35 left to play. But, Southwest scraped and clawed their way back into the contest and when Alexis Avery nailed a three-pointer, found themselves only down five points (70-65) with 0:41 on the clock. That, however, would be as close as Southwest could get as the Lady Bulldogs hit three of four free throws down the stretch to escape with the victory.

Shaniece Sheffield and Shanekqua Bibbs led the Lady Bears with 26 and 22 points, respectively. Avery totaled six points while Casey Brumfield scored four. Alex Newsome netted three points and Cassie Berry and Lacey Orr both scored two. Southwest hit 16 of 18 free throws.

Delainna Lyons led Gulf Coast with 15 points. The Lady Bulldogs hit 21 of 33 free throws.

Southwest hits the road on Monday as the Lady Bears and Bears travel to Ellisville to face Jones County. The ladies’ game gets underway at 6:00 with the men to follow at 8:00.
