Bears stumble at Gulf Coast

Poor shooting was the downfall for Southwest Monday night as the Lady Bears dropped an 88-71 and the Bears went down 84-66 at Mississippi Gulf Coast in Perkinston. With the losses both Southwest teams fell to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the South.

As with the Lady Bears, shooting woes kept the Southwest men at bay all night  despite Devin Flowers’ team-leading 27 points. Southwest hit only 35.3% from the field in the first half (12-34), while Gulf Coast (10-1, 2-0) hit 48.3 (14-29) and found themselves in a 41-29 hole at the break.

The second half was only slightly better for Southwest. With Flowers getting 17 of his points in the final 20 minutes, the Bears shooting hit 15 of 36 from the field (41.7). Unfortunately, Gulf Coast also improved, going 16 of 26 (61.5%) as they took the win.

“Even though the score didn’t show it,” said Southwest head coach Casey Carter, “the majority of our guys played with more energy tonight and were better on the boards (Southwest held a 39-30 rebound advantage on the night). That’s two things we’ve been lacking the last few games.”

“I’m just really proud of Devin Flowers and Donovan Ross,” Carter continued, “with the effort they gave tonight and really pleased with Donavan James and the energy he gave us off the bench.”

Ross added 19 points for the Bears while Mark Bridgewater chipped in eight. James and Christopher Lawrence both netted four points with Deione Weeks and Corey Williams both scoring two. Southwest made good on 10 of 14 free throws.

The Bulldogs’ JaMichael Hawkins led all scorers with 28 points in the game. Gulf Coast hit 22 of 34 free throws.

After taking time off for final exams, Southwest returns to the court one more time in 2012 when they host Delgado on December 11. Game times are 5:30 for the ladies and 7:15 for the men.
