Lady Bears drop season opener

Making the long trip up I-55 to Senatobia, the Southwest basketball teams started the 2012-13 season on a down note Thursday as they dropped a pair of non-division games to host Northwest Mississippi Community College. The Lady Bears fell 66-58 while a furious second-half rally allowed the Rangers to come from behind to defeat the Southwest men 98-94.

Taking an early 2-0 lead on Nikki McChristian’s jumper, the Lady Rangers led by as many as 14 points in the first half before settling for a 37-24 lead at the break.

Northwest built their lead to as many as 16 points in the second half, 58-42, before the Lady Bears began a late run to make the game interesting. Outscoring their hosts 16-5 over a span of just over 8:00, Southwest pulled to within five point (63-58) on Fredrikah Wilson’s basket with 0:23 left to play. But, that would be as close as it would get as Northwest held on for the eight-point win.

“I’m not pleased with the outcome, but I am please with the effort,” said first-year Southwest head coach Brent Harris. “We just have to handle the pressure better and bounce back tomorrow.”

“We turned the ball over too much,” Harris continued (the Lady Bears gave up the ball 29 times on the night) and didn’t shoot well from the free throw line (9-18). (But) Fredrikah had a good night and April (Levy) did a good job.”

Wilson led the Lady Bears with 17 points on 7-10 shooting from the field and 4-6 from the free throw line. Levy went 4-6 from the field and 2-2 from the charity stripe to finish with 10 points.

Milesha McNulty scored seven points in the game while Katrina Littlepage scored six. Chicurial Hill added five points while Alexis Avery had four. Cassie Berry and Katelyn Whaley both netted three points and Elayne Robinson had two.

Bethany Lytle led Northwest with 16 points. The Lady Rangers hit 12 of 18 free throws.

Southwest returns to the court Monday when they open the home portion of their schedule against Meridian. Game times are 5:30 for the ladies and 7:15 for the men.
